The Pope dedicated his annual meeting with future priests to talk about the importance of freedom.

Benedict highlighted the idea of service as an integral part of freedom.

The first fact to be observed, therefore, is the truth: freedom against truth is not freedom.  When one serves others, he creates a common space of freedom.

The pope’s message took place at the Roman Major Seminary in Rome on the eve of the day of Our Lady of Trust. He called freedom the “dream of humanity,” and spoke about it by making reference to the teachings of St. Paul.

Paul dares to propose a powerful paradox: ‘Through love, be servants,’ meaning that, paradoxically, freedom is achieved by serving others and  we become free if we become servants of one another.

The Pope also spoke to the future priests about Paul’s warning on becoming arrogant.

In this warning from St. Paul, we must also find a reason to examine our own consciousness and to not think we are superior to others. By finding the humility of Christ, and the humility of Our Lady, we, enter obedience of faith.

Benedict had dinner with the seminarians before giving his speech. An ideal visit for any seminarian.
