YoutubeMay 23, 2010. The Holy Shroud has been put away after being on exhibit inside the cathedral of Turin, Italy, for 44 days. Two million people have come here to see it and to better understand the last moments of Jesus’ life.

It has also brought together hundreds of scientists and researchers of this linen cloth. They agree there is a lack of new studies and that in them photography and information technology will have a fundamental role.

With these new technologies they can obtain more anatomical facts of the crucifixion.

Nello Balossino
International Centre of Sindonology (Turin)

“Photography and information technology will play a major part because they are two disciplines that have provided key elements to the interdisciplinary study of the relic.”

Msgr. Giuseppe Ghiberti
President, Diocesan Commission for the Holy Shroud (Turin)

“In the last years studies have been centered on areas of history and information technology. So they have worked a lot with photography for the three-dimensional and other properties.”

Maximiliano Judica Cordiglia
Documentarian

“Recently a French technology was used that allows us to see three dimensional contents without needing to put on special glasses.”

One of the latest facts that are known was found by the Mechanical Engineering Department of the University of Padua, Italy. During the restoration in 2002, they discovered that another image existed in the back part of the cloth.

This image is not identical to the front part but it corresponds to the back part of the head. And the image is embodied in the fibers of the linen from the front part of one and the other side, while in the middle of the fibers there is nothing. For this reason experts conclude it could not be painted.

Another new investigation is one that has been carried out by various scientists from an Italian agency for new technologies and energy. They say they have produced an image similar to the Holy Shroud thanks to a luminous radiation.

Emmanuela Marinelli
Holy Shroud Expert
“They have used a laser over the cloth that produces ultraviolet radiation and they have obtained a yellow color like the one on the cloth in the area of images. This has led us to believe the  images are the work of luminous radiation.”

For the moment it is unknown when we will be able to see the Holy Shroud again. But in the meantime, scientists can continue working with the available material to understand the most they can.
