World Youth Day Madrid 2011 will go down in history as the greenest and most environmentally friendly. So far, this website, has been part of the solution. Its mission is to support young adults in Europe by helping them find carpools or public transportation routes to limit CO2 emissions.
The website is called “Carpooling Madrid 11
.” It helps those who don't have the means to get to World Youth Day, by proving them with information of those who have spare room in their cars.
That way there will be less traffic, reduced CO2 emissions and of course, all passengers would split the cost of gas. It's also a great way to meet new people and make friends.
The website asks users if they're looking for transportation or if they can provide it. Then the drivers can list their set of rules. For example, if passengers can smoke, eat in the car or bring pets. The cost of the trip will also be specified up front.
Several youths traveling from Italy, Slovakia, Portugal and Spain have already signed up on the website. Because of geographical reasons, for now, the initiative is only for those in Europe. But depending on its success, the initiative, could jump to other continents.
It may seem small, but this collaboration has already saved roughly 334 pounds of C02 emissions.
According to forecasts, WYD will attract at least 1.5 million youths, which could very possibly make it one of the most environmentally sustainable event in history.
Besides the idea of carpooling, a Spanish company will calculate and offset emissions of greenhouse gases.
