Cardinal Velasio De Paolis has granted Álvaro Corcuera, director general of the Legionaries of Christ, a "rest period for health reasons in order to recover for the forthcoming General Chapter."
Until that moment his vicar general, Sylvester Heereman will exercise his functions.
The cardinal explained that "it is not resignation" and that the priest Álvaro Corcuera remains in his position but ceases his functions until the next general chapter is conviened.
The spokesman for the Legionaries of Christ says that Father Álvaro "suffers exhaustion from the wear of these years.”
