YoutubeOctober 6, 2009. Saint Peters Basilica, the facade of Campidoglio Square and the courtyard at Farnese Palace are some of the gems a genius like Michelangelo left the Eternal City.

Even though most tend to associate the artist with his beautiful frescoes at the Sistine Chapel or Pieta, the sculpture he created when he was 25, he also left his mark in architecture.

A mark that has gone unrecognized for most until now at the exhibition “Michelangelo, Rome’s architect.”

Pina Ragionieri
Casa Buonarroti Foundation

“This exhibition features the work of Michelangelo in Rome, completed projects and the unfinished. It aims to give everyone a new way of seeing the importance of Michelangelo in Rome.”

A new way to view art history. A new way to learn the history of the Eternal City.

The exhibition includes documents from some of the works the artists rendered for the Popes of his time, like the redesign of Campidoglio Square or the construction of the dome at St. Peter’s Basilica.

Probably the most interesting, are the projects he never got the chance to bring to life.

In all, the exhibit features 105 sketches that illustrate Michelangelo as an architect who helped turn Rome into an Eternal City.
