Msgr. Rino Fisichella: The bureaucracy in the life of the Church is excessive

October 9, 2012

(Romereports.com) The Vatican is getting ready to start off  'The Year of Faith' this October 11. The big day will begin with a Mass at St. Peter's Square. That date is a significant one, since it marks 50 years since the opening of the Second Vatican Council.

Rino Fisichella, who serves as the president of the Pontifical Council for the New Evangelization, said one of the challenges within the Church, is its excessive bureaucracy.

President, Pontifical Council for the New Evangelization

“I think we have become too bureaucratic, at times, when it comes to the life of the Church, the Sacraments and Sacramental life. We now need to return to being a community that announces the living encounter with the Lord, to be able to express the joy of this encounter. If we remain closed on ourselves, self-sufficient, there cannot be a new evangelization.”

During the opening Mass of the Year of Faith, there will also be several moments to mirror what happened 50 years ago with the Second Vatican Council. That includes a procession with 400 bishops and the reading of key fragments of the Council's constitution.

After the Mass, the Pope will greet the leader of the Orthodox Church, Patriarch Bartholomew. Also, just as it was done back when the Council  finished,  the Pope will deliver the so called message 'to the people of God' to people who represent different groups. That will include artist James MacMillan, scientist Fabiola Gianotti, and young people from different countries. Also included on that list will be some of the miners who were trapped underground in Chile.

“To turn the Year of Faith into a vehicle, where we can  gather everything the Council has given us. During the Year of faith we are called not only to know ourselves better but also to carry out our formation, and bring forth the teaching of the Council.”

Seventy of the so called Council Fathers, who took part in the Second Vatican Council have also been invited to the ceremony. However, because of their age, only 14 of them will attend the Mass. In fact, the youngest one from this group is 79 years old.
