(Romereports.com) Argentine Cardinal Leonardo Sandri agrees that one of the main tasks for the next Pope will be to reform the Roman Curia.
He knows it well, having worked for seven years as the substitute for
General Affairs for the Secretariat of State. Since 2007, he heads the
Congregation for the Oriental Churches.

“I
think that's a lesson Benedict XVI leaves behind, highlighting that the
Pope can do a lot or very little, and that he needs the bishops'
support. The Roman Curia must be at the service of the Petrine ministry
and the bishops. From that point of view, it must be organized to serve
the Pope efficiently, and to serve the whole Church through the College
of Bishops, and its members.”
In terms of his ideal candidate. Cardinal Sandri looks for someone who can take on the “eclipse of God from society and disregard for religious practice,” and who can govern.

saintly person, or one on their way to sainthood. A person with the
physical strength to carry the weight of the papacy. A person who also
has the qualities to make him approachable, acceptable to those in
search of God, and who approach the Church. Also someone with management
qualities that can help govern the Church.”
The resignation of Benedict XVI was not a complete surprise for Cardinal Sandri, because he had mentioned it in the book Light of the World. But he did say it would make an impact in the conclave.

themselves if need be.”
Cardinal Leonardo Sandri is one of the 19 prelates from Latin America
that will partake in the conclave. He was born in Buenos Aires,
Argentina to Italian immigrants 69 years ago. He served as papal nuncio
to Venezuela and Mexico, and was the one that announced to the world the death of John Paul II.

Benedict XVI created him cardinal on November 2007. He is one of the most influential members within the Vatican.
