Cardinal Pell: We've got to have a Pope who is able to speak to the world

March 7, 2013

(Romereports.com) This will be the second conclave for Cardinal George Pell, and this time, he has a new approach. The archbishop of Sydney, who at one point considered a career in professional Australian football, knows how to prepare before hitting the field, so to speak, inside the Sistine Chapel.

CARD. GEORGE PELL
Archbishop of Sydney (Australia)

(February 27th, 2013)
“We'll I'm trying to get my prayers said. And I'm praying for light and wisdom, the Italians said luce e saggezza, and I started talking to people. I have some ideas on my own about what are the challenges facing the Church and I'm talking to people to see to what extent they agree with that, and them we try to see who might be able to answer those challenges best.”

For the next Pope, he seeks a candidate than can pass along enthusiasm to Catholics and non-Catholics alike.

“We've got to have a Pope who is able to speak to the world, to modern communications and I think this time we're gonna have a pastoral pope who can encourage the Vatican Curia to lift their game.”

This conclave also differs from the first because Benedict XVI resigned, not died. This will factor in to future Pope's decisions.

CARD. GEORGE PELL

(February 27th, 2013)
“It is a development in the tradition. Certainly the Holy Father will not be elected for a fixed period. The role of the successor of Peter, as a general rule will be for life. But how it works in the future?”

A large part of that future will be decided by Cardinal Pell and the 114 other papal electors. For many, it'll be, without a doubt, the most important decision of their lives.
