Breaking News: Church Statistics: Catholic population growing in Africa and Asia

May 18, 2013. (Romereports.com) The Vatican has published its new Pontifical Yearbook. The 2012 volume includes all statistics related to the Church. The data gathered back in 2011 shows that that year,  there were 1.2 billion Catholics worldwide, which is 1.5% more than the year before. Population growth marked a 1.23% increase during that year.

In Africa and Asia the Catholic population is  proportionally growing double the rate when compared to the general population growth. It's not the same in Europe and Latin America though. There, the Catholic rate has not grown. Rather, it's proportional to the population.

The decline in some areas and growth in others has leveled numbers off. In 2011, about 16% of Catholics lived in Africa. 48.8% in the Americas, 10.9% is Asia, 23.5% in Europe and about 0.8% in Australia.

The number of Catholics in Africa has grown by 4.3% and about 2% in Asia. In Europe and America the number of Catholics has remained steady.

The number of priests has also increased. The last ten years shows a 2.1% increase. In 2012 marked a total of 413, 418 priests. In the last decade the number of priests increased about 39.5% in Africa and about 32% in Asia. The rate in the Americas has kept steady and in Europe the rate has decreased 9%.

However, the number of permanent deacons in Europe and the Americas has grown 40%.

The year 2012 shows that the number of seminarians grew 7.5% in the last decade.

As far as women religious, statistics show there's been a ten percent decrease in the last decade.  But on the other hand the number of female religious has grown 28% in Africa and 18% in Asia. There are a total of 713,000 female religious and 33% of them are in those two continents.

Breaking News: Pope to Pontifical Missionary Works: Your work is still relevant

May 17, 2013. (Romereports.com) For the very first time, Pope Francis met with the General Directors of the Pontifical Missionary Works, which is the department that coordinates the areas where missionary work takes place.

Cardinal Fernando Filoni is the Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, meaning the Vatican department that oversees all the missionary work carried out by the Church. The Pope thanked the Cardinal for his work. He also mentioned that Cardinal Filoni has more than just one job.

POPE FRANCIS
“Cardinal Filoni has another job besides this. He is a professor. He actually teaches me about the Church. Yes, that's right. He comes to me and tells me 'this diocese is like this, and this other diocese is like that.' I get to understand the Church a lot more thanks to his lectures. Plus, I don't pay for the lectures, he gives them to me for free.”

The Pope thanked the Congregation for all the work it does in different parts of the world. He also highlighted that missionary work is still very relevant and it holds a special place in his heart.

POPE FRANCIS
“I would like to say that I have a heartfelt appreciation for the work you do, because you keep evangelization alive. It's a perfect example of what the Church should do.”

Pope Francis also invited the directors to uphold a request Pope Paul VI made 50 years ago, which is to protect their missionary work and its final goal of proclaiming the Gospel to those who need it most.

Breaking News: Pope Francis: Let's recognize our failings. Let's allow God to lead us on the right path

May 17, 2013. (Romereports.com) During morning Mass at the Vatican's Casa Santa Marta, Pope Francis talked about the first Pope. He described St. Peter as a sinner, but also as a man who despite his flaws, was quite noble.  Above it all, said the Pope, St. Peter allowed himself to be guided by Christ. The Pope explained that the apostle recognized his own failings and human miseries, allowing God to help him move forward.

POPE FRANCIS
“Today, let us ask the Lord that the example of St. Peter, a man who constantly encounters the Lord and who is purified by the Lord, making him more spiritually mature,  may help us move forward. May it allow us to search for the Lord and to find Him. The most important thing though, is to allow ourselves to be found by the Lord. He is always there, close to us, looking for us. But sometimes, we look the other way because we don't want to speak to the Lord or we don't want to allow ourselves to be found by Him.”

The Pope invited Christians to follow St. Peter's example, by acknowledging mistakes and being open to God, so that He may lead them along the right path.

Premium News: Clericus Soccer Cup Final: North American College vs. Mater Ecclesiae

May 18, 2013. (Romereports.com) Here on the field, players have a motto.

MARTIN RODRIGUEZ
North American College
“We like to play hard, but we like to pray hard as well.”

Every practice, that's exactly what they do.

CHRIS SEILER
North American College
“You have guys who have played college soccer and semi pro soccer to guys who played in grade school and have sort of played for fun every since.”

CHRISTOPHER BERNABE
North American College
“From Portland, from New York, all the way to Texas.”

Despite their different backgrounds, they all have one thing in common: they are all priests and seminarians at Rome's Pontifical North American College. But it's not all fun and games. The team, called 'The Martyrs' is going up against the 'Mater Ecclesiale' team on Saturday May 18th. The winner will be this year Clericus Cup Champion.

CHRIS SEILER
North American College
“Those who God calls to the priesthood are men, normal men who like to play sports, like competition.”

CHRISTOPHER BERNABE
North American College
“Wanting  to go out there and compete , wanting to go out there and go against your brother.”

They say sometimes what's most interesting isn't always the score board, but the lessons they learn on the field.

CHRISTOPHER BERNABE
North American College
“So many times, my brothers humble me out here, with their great skills and I used to be so much better than I was, but now I have to confront my own humanity and weakness.”

They say it's here that they truly understand what John Paul II meant when he described sports as a school of virtue.

Premium News: The penance of Scottish Cardinal Patrick O'Brien, as seen through Canon Law

May 17, 2013. (Romereports.com) This week, the Vatican announced that Cardinal  Patrick O'Brien will leave Scotland for several months, for the purpose of penance, spiritual renewal and prayer.

Even though the announcement didn't directly specify why O'Brien is leaving, he was accused of sexually abusing seminarians.

FR. EDUARDO BAURA
Canon Law Professor Pontifical University of the Holy Cross (Rome)
“The press release is quite short, but it implies that the cardinal's penance will be done according the Pope's agreement. But it doesn't seem to be an imposed penance per say, but rather a penance for his sins, for the serious acts he committed. Given the fact that he is a cardinal and a public figure, we've learned that he will leave Scotland for some time to do penance and pray."

In a way his retreat from public life, is unusual, even in accordance to Canon Law, precisely because O'Brien is a cardinal. But it does give a glimpse into how both canon law and civil law can come into play in these type of cases.

FR. EDUARDO BAURA
Canon Law Professor Pontifical University of the Holy Cross (Rome)
“Even though he is a cardinal, he is still part of the clergy. Of course, when the clergy commits grave sins against the sixth commandment, the person can be punished under canon law. It's all about the canonical process. There are different procedures that that can be sped up, especially when there is concrete evidence of the crime. There's also the option of initiating a judicial process to clarify the truth. But yes of course, he is subject to punishment even if he is a cardinal.”

The statement also said 'any decision regarding future arrangements for O'Brien shall be agreed with by the Holy See.'  According to professor Baura, when cases like these involve bishops or cardinals, Canon Law allows the Pope himself to directly take action on the matter.

FR. EDUARDO BAURA
Canon Law Professor Pontifical University of the Holy Cross (Rome)
“It could be the Pope who takes action, but in these type of cases, he would do so through the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. So in the case of a cardinal, the Pope could handle the case directly. In dealing with a cardinal, there is also the possibility of removing the title of cardinal all together, which actually has happened once before.”

Professor Baura says the fact that Cardinal O'Brien will retire from public life is not just symbolic, rather it sends a strong message that the Vatican is taking action in tackling sexual abuse committed by clergy.
