October 22, 2009. The Bulgarian Orthodox Church has recognized the urgent need to find unity with the Catholics.
The president of the diocese of Central and Western Europe of the Patriarchate of Bulgaria, Tichon, Ivanov, told the Pope that the unity is necessary because citizens do not understand the divisions and discussions between Catholics and Orthodox.
Regarding the Committee of Dialogue meeting between Catholics and heads of the Orthodox Church in Cyprus, Ivanov said that there’s nothing to fear about finding a way to celebrate the Eucharist together.
The Bulgarian Orthodox Church became autonomous or autocephalous in the year927 and has 6 million followers. The Orthodox Church has about 225 million followers world wide.
