December 17, 2009. Zambian Archbishop Emmanuel Milingo, who created a scandal after he got married and ordained bishops without the pope’s permission has been officially dismissed of his clerical office and function, meaning he is no longer a priest.
The Vatican made the announcement today after years of trying to bring Milingo back into communion with the church.
He made headlines in 2001, when he married a south Korean woman and was later excommunicated in 2006 after he ordained 4 bishops without permission.
Dismissing a cleric from the Church is the most extraordinary form of disciplinary action.
