July 17, 2011. (Romereports.com) Music is the universal language, so it makes sense that one foundation is using different rhythms to empower entire communities.  

The name is “Playing for Change.” Its mission is to educate children and adults on music and the arts. It started about a decade ago. Now, it has music programs in Ghana, Nepal, South Africa, Mali and Rwanda. So far it has gotten positive results.

Each community is encouraged to focus on its own music and its own culture. It's a way to develop unique music, but also to use music as a tool to discuss controversial issues like war and sex trafficking.

Several music schools have been opened with the help of staff, volunteers and of course most importantly, with the communities themselves.

With seven programs and over 600 students “Playing for Change” is already making strides. The schools have created more than 130 jobs. Even so, the foundation is hoping to grow even more in the coming years. A way to change the world through music, one song at a time.
