April 22, 2010. Pope Benedict XVI accepted the resignation of the Bishop of Kildare, following the publication of a government report that exposed clerical sex abuse and a widespread cover up by the Catholic Church in Ireland.
Bishop James Moriarty served as an auxiliary bishop in Dublin from 1991-2002. Moriarty says he resigned because he “should have challenged the prevailing culture.”
Moriarty was not one of church leaders who was directly criticized in the Murphy Report.
It is unknown who will replace Moriarty.
