December 23, 2010. The Vatican has announced the election of a Chinese priest, Fr. Savio Hon Tai-Fai from Hong Kong, to hold the number two position in of its most important offices.
He will serve as secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples, raising him to the status of Archbishop.
This comes after recent tension between the two parties, when the
Vatican accused China of oppressing religious freedom and attempting to
control the conscience of its citizens and interfere in the internal
affairs of the Catholic Church
Father Hon Tai-Fai will be in charge of choosing new bishops for 1/3 of the world.
