Earlier in his address the pope spoke of the Order of Cluny, a monastic movement of great importance in the Middle Ages. The order worked to revitalize the liturgical celebration and introduced the memory of the deceased.
Benedict XVI
"Cluny helped to forge the Continent’s Christian identity by its emphasis on the primacy of the spirit, respect for human dignity, commitment to peace and an authentic and integral humanism."
Benedict XVI noted the Order of Cluny changed the life of the Church, encouraged priestly celibacy and greater devotion to Our Lady.
