July 5, 2011. (Romereports.com) The Vatican's official newspaper is celebrating a milestone anniversary. L'Osservatore Romano turns 150 this month, and of course, Pope Benedict XVI made a visit to the publication's headquarters to congratulate the staff.
Benedict XVI“This office isn't just dedicated to work itself. Above all its mission is to promote knowledge, thought, judgement and reflection.”
The first edition of this newspaper was published on July 1st, 1861. The Pope congratulated the newsroom for showing professional and Christian values in its stories.
Benedict XVI“Just as its name says, it's a great observatory that allows us to see the reality of the world. It informs us of our reality. It reflects on all type of issues from afar and close by.”
The international staff publishes a daily newspaper in Italian and weekly editions in English and Spanish among other languages. The pope congratulated the team on keeping up with the digital age and also for keeping readers up to date with contemporary issues. But he also mentioned the importance of treasuring the long history of the paper. The Pope then added “the memory of the past is fruitful only if it becomes an occasion to draw nourishment from deep roots and to look to the future with hope.”
