October 28, 2012. (Romereports.com) With this Mass in St. Peter's Basilica, the Pope officially marked the end of the Synod on the New Evangelization. With hundreds of bishops and cardinals gathered there, the Pope reiterated that the Church has a responsibility to evangelize to the modern world.
“It has been reaffirmed that appropriate catechesis must accompany preparation for Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. The importance of Confession, the sacrament of God’s mercy, has also been emphasized. This sacramental journey is where we encounter the Lord’s call to holiness, addressed to all Christians.”
The goal of the New Evangelization is to intensify the faith in countries where Christianity is losing strength. Everything from not going to Mass or celebrating the Sacraments, to not passing on the faith to younger generations. Above it all, it's an initiative to fight against religious illiteracy and indifference.
“During the Synod, it was emphasized that there are still many regions in Africa, Asia and Oceania whose inhabitants await with lively expectation, sometimes without being fully aware of it, the first proclamation of the Gospel. So we must ask the Holy Spirit to arouse in the Church a new missionary dynamism, whose progatonists are, in particular, pastoral workers and the lay faithful.”
The three week synod began on October 7th. Even though the New Evangelization will take on different forms in each country, the Pope has emphasized that the message of Jesus will remain the same. It's just a matter of perhaps using different tools or vocabulary to promote the Gospel and to explain why it's relevant in society and in people's daily lives.
“These people have therefore lost a precious treasure, they have “fallen” from a lofty dignity – not financially or in terms of earthly power, but in a Christian sense – their lives have lost a secure and sound direction and they have become, often unconsciously, beggars for the meaning of existence.”
Now that the Synod is over, the Pope will begin to prepare a document that summarizes the key points and solutions that were discussed throughout these last three weeks.
