The pope wrote a personal letter to the Archbishop of Aparecida, Brazil
for his 25th ordination anniversary. In the letter, Benedict XVI
recognizes the work the Brazilian cardinal had done in spreading the
Gospel and in helping other priests and religious.
At one point, Cardinal Raymundo Damasceno was the president of the Latin American Episcopal Council (CELAM) and also Secretary of Brazil's Conference of Bishops.
