Pope creates a Pontifical Council to promote the new evangelization of the West

YoutubeJune 28, 2010. On the eve of the feast of Saints Peter and Paul, Benedict XVI has announced the formation of a  Vatican department dedicated to the new evangelization of Europe and America.

The technical name of the dicastery is the Pontifical Council for New Evangelization of the West.  Announced during a ceremony in the Basilica of St. Paul outside the Walls, the department will be dedicated to bringing Christian faith to places where the concept of God has been overshadowed.

The first president of the department could  be Archbishop Salvatore Fisichella, the current rector of the Lateran University of Rome and president of the Pontifical Academy for Life.
