The pope, dressed as a pilgrim, walked through the cathedral's Holy Door, which was opened at the start of the year. Benedict XVI prayed at the apostle's tomb and embraced the statue of St. James. Finally, the pope watched the “botafumeiro” or “smoke thrower”, a giant incense burner used at special pilgrim Masses.
