coat of arms for cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, now Pope Francis, reflects his humility and reverence for the the Virgin Mary. However, as Pope, his crest will have to be modified to follow papal heraldry rules.
It features three symbols in
a triangle shape, over a blue
background. The most prominent feature, at the top of the triangle, is
the sun with the letters IHS in the middle. The symbol represents the
Jesuit order, of which he is a part of.
On the lower left hand
side is a five-point star, which along with the blue background,
symbolizes the Virgin Mary. On the right hand side, is a grape vine
symbolizing Jesus as the grower of the Faith.
Beneath the crest
is his motto in Latin which means
“Lowly and yet chosen,” referring to a
passage from the bible of when Jesus chose Mathew as a disciple.
Matthew was a tax collector who left behind earthly riches to preach the
Gospel.
