Benedict XVI has sent a letter to the Taize community on the fifth anniversary of the death of its founder, Brother Roger.
The Pope called him an "ineffable witness to the Gospel, peace and reconciliation.” He highlighted his work for Christian unity and said the "ecumenism of holiness" of Brother Roger should be an example for Christian unity.
Benedict XVI said that the Taize community allows young people around the world to “find meaning in their lives” and have “a personal experience with God.”
Brother Roger died on August 16, 2006 aged 80 – he was killed by a mentally ill woman.
The Taize community was born 70 years ago, when the world was at war. It now has over 100 members, Catholics and Protestants.
The community has always been an example of unity. Some of its members live in developing countries, supporting the most disadvantaged.
