YoutubeJanuary 25, 2013. (Romereports.com) Benedict XVI took a break from his regular tweets to take a stand in more controversial matters, and offer his support for the March for Life, which will take place on Friday, January 25 in Washington, D.C. Reaching out to his nearly 2.6 million followers, he stated, “I join all those marching for life from afar, and pray that political leaders will protect the unborn and promote a culture of life.”

The March for Life is an annual pro-life event that draws hundreds of thousands of people to Washington. It marks the anniversary on January 22, 1973 of the U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized the practice of abortion under some circumstances.

In 2012, nearly 400,000 people marched upon the Capitol demanding the Supreme Court decision be overturned to end the practice of abortion. Organizers expect record crowds for this year's 40 anniversary event.

It is the first time the Pope uses his Twitter account to express his support to a direct cause, as opposed to issuing statements on the Christian faith.
