Benedict XVI has appointed Gerhard Ludwig Müller, who serves as the bishop of Regensbug, Germany, as the new prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.
This is one of the most prestigious positions in the Vatican. It's actually the post Benedict XVI had before being elected Pope.
In addition to being the prefect of the Doctrine for the Faith, Müller, will also lead the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei, the Pontifical Biblical Commission and the International Theological Commission.
He will take on the post held by American Cardinal William Levada. The 76 year old was appointed in 2005.
Müller is the editor of the Pope's 16 volume edition titled the “Collected Writings of Joseph Ratzinger.” He has also published over 400 articles on theology.
