July 23, 2012. (Romereports.com) Benedict XVI has appointed Archbishop Pier Luigi Celata, as his new Vice Camerlengo. He replaces Spanish Cardinal Santos Abril, who after being named a Cardinal, can no longer serve in his previous post.
 
Italian Pier Luigi Celata is 75 years old and has vast experience in Vatican diplomacy. He has served as a nuncio in Turkey, Belgium and Luxemburg. Up until recently he was the number two of the Pontifical Council for Inter-religious Dialogue.


During the 'Sede Vacante,' which is the transition period between the death of a Pope and the election of his successor, Celata will assist the Camerlengo, who is Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone. Together, they will deal with administering the Vatican's assets during the vacancy period.
