March 31, 2009- Benedict XVI has ordered an apostolic visitation to the Legionaries of Christ and the Regnum Christi movement.
Several of the Pope’s personal envoys will go to see their apostolic
activities firsthand to understand what happened in the past and what
reforms are being made. The delegates will submit a report directly to
Benedict XVI, who will make a decision on any appropriate measures.
The decision about the apostolic visitation was communicated to the
order by the Vatican on March 10, but was made public only until now by
Father Álvaro Corcuera, the director general of the Legionaries of
Christ. The Vatican says the apostolic visit will help to overcome
difficulties through truth and transparency.
The Pope has expressed his solidarity and sent his prayers for the
shameful acts of their founder. Benedict XVI also encouraged them to
continue working for the good of the Church.
Father Corcuera has expressed his regrets for what happened in the past
and asked for forgiveness from those who have been offended. He has
also expressed thanks for the apostolic visitation, and assured that
they will fully cooperate.
