March 1, 2010. Pope Benedict XVI showed his solidarity with Chile, after the 8.8 earthquake that struck the Latin American country which killed hundreds of people and wounded thousands others. Benedict XVI called for Catholic institutions to help the victims.
Benedict XVI“At this time, there’s a spontaneous spring to prayer to the Lord for the victims and a message of encouragement for all to overcome this great trial.”
In his Sunday Angelus address, Benedict XVI also denounced the wave of violence against Christians in Iraq, particularly in the city of Mosul. The violence has lead more than 400 families to flee the country.
The pope has asked the Iraqi government to provide more security for religious minorities, like Christians. In fact he told the international community that there needs to be stronger effort to build reconciliation and justice in the region.
Benedict XVI“I hope we don’t give into the temptation to assert temporary interests and put them above the security and fundamental rights of every citizen.”Benedict XVI said he stands by Iraqi Christians and will be praying for peace and stability for the promotion of security for the Bishops of Mosul, the former Nineveh.
