It was a way to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Italy's unification. During the brief ceremony, Benedict XVI "entrusted" Italy to the Virgin Mary. He also called for Italy to have “peace and prosperity,” while asking for the country's “internal unity between its rich tradition and its Christian faith.”
