Pope receives medal from Orthodox university during general audience

YoutubeOctober 5, 2011. (Romereports.com) During the general audience, Benedict XVI received a gold medal from the theology department from the University of Thessaloniki in Greece.

They awarded the pope with the Apostle Jason of Thessaloniki Gold Medal. The pope then thanked them for the symbolic gesture.

“I am deeply honored by this gracious gesture, which is an eloquent sign of the growing understanding  and dialogue between Catholic and Orthodox Christians.”

Benedict XVI then expressed his wishes for greater unity between the two churches. He also noted that this medal could serve as a sign for better communication between the two groups in the future.

“I pray that it will be a harbinger of ever greater progress in our efforts to respond in fidelity, truth and charity to the Lord's summons to unity.”

The pope also greeted other groups of pilgrims present for the general audience. Among them was a group of Filipinos who are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Pontifical Filipino College in Rome.
