November 11, 2010. Pope Benedict has written
a letter to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad voicing his
agreement for the “launch of a bilateral Commission to help address
questions of common concern, including the judicial status of the
Catholic Church.” The letter was delivered to the Iranian
President by Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran.
The Pope also made note of
the recent Special Assembly for the Middle East of the Synod of
Bishops which met in Rome in October. He believes the work of the
Synod will promote the freedom of people to express their faith in
public throughout the Middle East and the world.
President Ahmadinejad
wrote to the Pope in October calling for close collaboration between
Iran and the Vatican to fight against secularism and “tyrannical
structures that govern the planet.”
Ahmadinejad also thanked
the Pope for condemning the American pastor Terry Jones for
encouraging the burning of Korans on the anniversary of the September
11.
