Benedict XVI has sent Cardinal Robert Sarah to support the victims. He's the president of the Pontifical Council "Cor Unum.” He will be there from May 13th to the 16th.
As chairman of the department responsible for the pope's charities, he will visit Sendai, where the epicenter struck.
The Catholic Church is managing several shelters in the area of Saitama. Once he visits those affected, the Cardinal plans to hold a thanksgiving mass in Tokyo, to celebrate the beatification of John Paul II.
Cardinal Sarah will also meet with the leaders of the most active charities in Japan. The undersecretary of the Pontifical Council "Cor Unum"will also be attending.
