March 30, 2011. The meeting of the Bishops’ Commissions for the Family
and Life is currently taking place in Bogota, Colombia. The pope
wrote a letter to them expressing his concern on the protection of
the unity of the family.
He expressed his wishes for new projects that engage the community and help defend the rights of the family as well as the right to life.
Benedict
XVI noted that education programs which trivialize sexuality present
a challenge to many households and something the Church must face
head on. This along with problems of
immigration, poverty, and
a rapidly changing culture all present specific challenges to the
formation of the family.
The
letter also states that every effort to promote the family through
the union of a man and a woman is a praiseworthy action. Something
that he called the “seedbed of virtue,” which would lead to the
“environment
in which human life is joyously and responsibly
welcomed.”
