November 30, 2009. The president of Peru, Alan Garcia presented the pope with his program for disarmament in Latin America.
During his visit to the Vatican he explained to Benedict XVI the measures that the Peruvian government is proposing to eradicate poverty and promote collaboration with the Church.
The president of Peru gave the pope a shawl made from vicuña wool and told him it could come in handy when it’s cold in Rome. The pope in turn gave the president medals from his pontificate.
Alan Garcia said that he had already met Joseph Ratzinger 22 years ago when he was prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith during a visit to Peru.
Peru has some 28 million people 97% of which are Catholic.
