August 29, 2011. (Romereports.com) While addressing thousands of pilgrims, the pope said life shouldn't revolve around achieving high economic and social standing, but rather on generosity.

He said facing challenges with courage and faith is key.  During Sunday's angelus he urged all  to embrace the challenge.

“The Christian follows the Lord with love when he accepts his cross. Even though in the eyes of the world, it appears as a defeat and a 'loss of life.' But man knows that he does not bear his cross alone, but with Jesus, sharing the same path of self-giving.”

Benedict XVI called on all faithful to stay true to Jesus' calling, despite worldly distractions. He also reflected on Sunday's Gospel by focusing on how Jesus Himself, willfully accepted His own cross, despite the objections and shock of the disciples.

“By voluntarily accepting His cross, Jesus carries the cross of mankind, showing humanity the path to salvation.”

Among the thousands of people standing at the Pope's residence of Castel Gandolfo, were several seminarians of the Pontifical North American College in Rome. It was founded in 1859 after Pope Pius IX called for its construction.
