YoutubeAugust 5, 2010. Beginning next year, the Vatican will be supporting a total of 186 projects in 20 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.

That’s the goal set by the Populorum Progressio Foundation, founded by Pope John Paul II in 1992 to support indigenous and rural peoples in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Some of the projects funded include the purchase of tractors and the building of water wells and cisterns. There are also projects focusing on education, health and construction.

Some of the projects will be implemented in Haiti, a nation devastated by a massive earthquake on Jan. 12. The Foundation has focused its attention this year on that country by helping local organizations take control of their own development.
