Pressed by the media, cardinals opt for 'creative answers' to respect vow of secrecy

YoutubeMarch 5, 2013. (Romereports.com) Tuesday marked day two of the pre-conclave. A wave of journalists surrounded all cardinals as they walked out of their meetings. The one question that was heard the most was: When will the conclave start? But cardinals mostly responded with silence.

Silence

The second response to this question was a generic greeting, but nothing more.

Hello, Good Morning.

The third most heard response, was to have patience.

“It all went well, thank you. I'm very happy. I'm sure you'll all have a press briefing later.”

These were the most common responses given by cardinals. It's not really a surprise, since they all swore, before a Bible, to uphold a vow of secrecy and not share what is discussed in the meetings.

Others politely explained that they simply couldn't talk, wishing journalists a good day.

CARD. SEVERINO POLETTO
Archbishop Emeritus of Turin (Italy)
“You're making me famous with all this attention. I'm sorry I cannot give you any answers. I must be at peace with my conscience. Have a good day on the job though. I know you have to do your job, but I have to do mine.”

All the cameras, microphones and journalists are also attracting the attention of tourists who ask the media what all the fuss is about. The answer is simple though. It's all part of the election process before a Pope is elected.
