March 2, 2011. The highest Catholic public official in Pakistan was murdered after two gunmen reportedly ambushed his car while he was on his way to work. Shahbaz Bhatti received numerous death threats after his attempts to get rid of Pakistan's blasphemy law which brings a death sentence to anyone who insults Islam or the prophet Mohammed.
Mr. Bhatti was the first Christian to hold a cabinet position in Pakistan. He died at the age of 42.
