The Pope Meets the President of Seychelles

YoutubeOctober 25, 2010. The president of the Republic of Seychelles James Alix Michel and his delegation visited the Pope in Vatican City.

The meeting lasted about 15 minutes, in which Benedict XVI and Michel spoke in French about commitment and cooperation for the promotion of human dignity. The Pope and the president of the archipelago also discussed the importance of political measures and policies necessary to improve family life, youth education and the protection of the environment.

Benedict XVI gave Michel a commemorative medallion of his pontificate, while Michel gave the Pope a rendering of the first parish constructed on the Republic's largest island of Mahé.

The Seychelles are made up of about 115 islands in the Indian Ocean. The capital city of Victoria is situated on the island of Mahé. These 115 islands have a total population of about 84,000 people of whom about 85 percent are catholics.
