March 17, 2010. The queen of England has officially invited Pope Benedict XVI to the U.K. Elizabeth II will receive the pope in the palace of Holyroodhouse, in Edinburgh, the official residence of the former queen, who was Catholic, Marie Stuart.
This will be the first state visit by a pope to the U.K and will take place from September 16-19. During the pope’s visit, he will beatify Cardinal John Henry Newman at the Coventry airport. He will also visit the archbishop of Canterbury who’s the leader of the Anglican Church and head to the Palace of Westminster where he’ll meet with some of Great Britain’s civil authorities.
