January 25, 2013 will be the 30th anniversary
for the proclamation of the Code of Canon Law
, the system of law and practices the Catholic Church abides by, since its renewal in 1983 following several revisions to include decisions from the Second Vatican Council.
The Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts and the Joseph Ratzinger Vatican Foundation will organize a conference in Rome to spread knowledge of the Code.CARD. FRANCESCO COCCOPALMERIO
President, Pontifical Council for Legislative
“The Code also added something was not present at the Council. It introduced the Synod of Bishops, it's a place, a moment for bishops to debate and advise the Pope.”
Experts agree that the Code's renewal corrected the notion that justice and charity were at opposing sides. It also gave a stronger role to laymen and women.
MSGR. JUAN IGNACIO ARRIETA
Secretary, Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts
“It references the cooperation from everyone, of the faithful and of the priests in the governing of the Church, in the pastoral governing of the Church. Also, the incorporation of women in the pastoral work of the Church.”
Although the Code is now 30 years old, the work will never be complete. The commission that looks after it is constantly in search of answers to newer challenges facing Catholics in the areas of Canon Law.
