October 2, 2012. (Romereports.com) The Vatican's prosecutor is investigating why the Vatican's police department, left the Pope's butler in a small cell for roughly 15 days after his arrest.  While on the witness stand, the butler said his first cell was so small, he couldn't extend his arms. He also said, the lights were constantly left on.

“The butler was asked if for 15 or 20 days,  after his arrest, if he was kept in a small cell where he couldn't extend his arms. He said yes and in a way he complained. He was also asked if he had undergone physiological stress, and again he said yes. He said that stress came about in part when he was denied a pillow to sleep.”

But the Vatican's police department also known as the Gendarmerie, denies these accusations. On the contrary, officials say they offered the butler a  so called sleep mask, but they say the butler said no, because the light kept him company.

They also add that the light was always on to prevent him from injuring himself.

Furthermore, the butler always had lunch with police officers, he had known over the years. He always rejected offers to exercise at their Vatican gym and  was given a daily hour to be outdoors. They argue, his family also had unlimited visitation rights.
