Vatican says conclave could start before March 15 if all cardinals are in Rome

YoutubeFebruary 16, 2013. (Romereports.com) The spokesperson for the Vatican, Federico Lombardi, said that they are analyzing the possibility of starting the conclave sometime before March 15.

According to Vatican Law, the conclave has to begin 15 to 20 days after the Sede Vacante period starts, to give all cardinals time to get to Rome.

“If by chance all the cardinals are already here, there is no reason to wait anymore. The constitution can be interpreted in a different way. But only in the case that there is no need to wait for anyone else.”

The spokesperson for the Vatican also revealed that after February 28, Benedict XVI will likely stay for about two months at Castel Gandolfo.

“As of right now we are looking at two months. So, by about the end of April, or the beginning of May, which is the expected time of completion for the work at his new home.”

On Sunday, Benedict XVI will lead his second to the last Angelus at St. Peter's Square. Preparations are already underway for the 150,000 people expected to attend the event, along with civil leaders from Rome.
