YoutubeMarch 6, 2011. The film “Vision” tells the story of Hildegard von Bingen, a 12th century Benedictine nun who was also a composer, philosopher, physician, and an ecological activist. Needless to say that she was a pioneer in many of these fields during the Medieval times of Germany.

Born into a wealthy family, she was sent to live in a monastery at the age of eight for schooling. She decides to dedicate her life to chastity as a nun and eventually becomes head abbess of the convent.

Hildegard claims that she is receiving messages from God but many members of the cloister suspect she is being controlled by the Devil. By describing her visions she faces the possibility of excommunication. This eventually leads to a showdown between herself and the reigning abbot who is highly suspicious of her.

While receiving her visions, Hildegard is also fighting the status quo by trying to expand the role that women play in the Church during this time period.

The film was directed by the prominent feminist Margarethe von Trotta, who is part of the New German Cinema movement. The role of Hildegard is played by Barbara Sukowa, who has teamed up with Von Trotta in the past on different projects.

The film was originally released in 2009 but keep your eyes open because the DVD goes on sale April 19.
