The mayor of Madrid then gave the pope the keys to the city, a symbolic gesture that is given to all heads of state when visiting Madrid. John Paul II also received the keys on his visit to the Spanish capital in 1982.

Benedict XVI then walked through the Puerta de Alcalá. He was accompanied by 50 youth from around the world, dressed with traditional clothing.
