Benedict XVI
“Their presence awakens in our often hardened hearts a tenderness which opens us to salvation.”

During the meeting, a 20 year old student who is physically and mentally disabled addressed the pope. He said, at birth he wasn't expected to survive. But as years passed, he said the love of his parents was key.

Antonio
“It was thanks to the love they showed me, even when faced with what could turn out to be an obstacle in their lives, they decided to look toward the future. This attitude helped us to excel. It helped us to never give in.”

One of the young girls who suffers from a mental disability, gave a painting to the pope, which was made by someone who is also handicapped. After greeting a group up close, the pope said, despite their disabilities, they all play an important role in life.

Benedict XVI
“Dear friends, our society which too often questions the inestimable value of life, of every life needs you: in a decisive way you help to build the civilization of love.”

The Institute was founded in 1898. Its run by the Hospitaller Order of St. John of God, which helps the needy all over the world. It  includes 1,200 friars, 40,000 professionals and roughly 8,000 volunteers.

Benedict XVI
“Your lives and your committed service proclaim the greatness to which every human being is called: to show compassion and loving concern to the suffering just as God himself did.”

Toward the end, the choir played Bach's Magnificat, as the pope made his way to the Cuatro Vientos aerodrome where a vigil will take place.
