December 28, 2009. Instead of fireworks the new year began with the deadly explosions of bombs in Gaza. The death toll of the latest episode in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict continued to rise in early 2009.

The new year also began in the midst of an economic crisis. During a
meeting with the diplomatic corps, Benedict XVI said that founded
ethics based on dignity needed to be promoted in each individual to
overcome financial difficulties. On the other hand, 2009 had a good
start regarding science, technology and communications. The Holy See
and UNESCO teamed up to kick off the Year of Astronomy, organizing
several events throughout the year on Galileo Galilei.
And the Vatican launched its own Youtube channel, showing all of the Pope’s speeches, meetings and events.
