May 18, 2015. Msgr. Oscar Romero was adopted as a patron of Caritas Internationalis, according to an announcement that came just after the organization's General Assembly in Rome ended. The former Archbishop of San Salvador will be beatified on May 23, more than 35 years after he was assassinated while performing Mass.
He also led the Vatican department that funds the Roman Curia and maintains Vatican-owned properties, until his retirement in 1998. That same year, John Paul II created him a cardinal and appointed him as a delegate to the Patriarchal Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi.
With his death, there are now 205 members in the College of Cardinals, although only 113 are under 80, and eligible to vote in a conclave.
