May 18, 2015. Msgr. Oscar Romero was adopted as a patron of Caritas Internationalis, according to an announcement that came just after the organization's General Assembly in Rome ended. The former Archbishop of San Salvador will be beatified on May 23, more than 35 years after he was assassinated while performing Mass.
Pope Francis welcomed the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, António Guterres.
The two spoke about the crisis in the Mediterranean. Guterres thanked the Pope for his universal call to save the lives of the people who leave their homeland, in search of a better life.
They also spoke about the situation in Syria. Violence continues within the country, and now some two million people have fled to neighboring countries. Guterres also expressed his concern with European countries that restrict the arrival of Syrian refugees.
