Manos Unidas NGO: What can each person do to end hunger?

2014-03-04

What can you do? That's the question Spanish NGO Manos Unidas wants people to ask themselves, when it comes to using resources.

SOLEDAD SUÁREZ
President, Manos Unidas
"When we see so much need, we always blame others. But let's think about what each one of us can do. With our theme, 'A new world, a common project,' what we truly want is for each one of us to come up with a solution, and change how we go about using things, and how we live. This way we can end hunger in the world.”

The Madrid-based Catholic Charity has been working since 1960 with the "marginalized” people that Pope Francis talks about so often. His messages inspire them to keep up their work.

SOLEDAD SUÁREZ
President, Manos Unidas
"Above all, we would love it if, in addition to admiring the Pope, people would do what he says. Then we would really be able to have a more equal and fair distribution of wealth.”

This year's campaign focuses on the eight Millennium Development Goal from the UN: to develop a global partnership for development. Manos Unidas works in several areas like education, health, social welfare and agricultural development. Their experience has shown them that, with commitment, it is possible to build a better world.

SOLEDAD SUÁREZ
President, Manos Unidas
"We are perfectly aware that it is possible to rid the world of hunger, and we work towards that because we know it's possible. We're hopeful because, at Manos Unidas, we've seen that when we visit our projects. It gives us hope because we've found out that when things are done right, we're able to get rid of need.”

But, along with their optimism, they're also realistic. And so their plan is to raise awareness about hunger, which still affects about 840 million people worldwide. One of they ways, is by using powerful ads on poverty to get people's attention, and hopefully keeping it long enough for them to act on it.
