May 18, 2015. Msgr. Oscar Romero was adopted as a patron of Caritas Internationalis, according to an announcement that came just after the organization's General Assembly in Rome ended. The former Archbishop of San Salvador will be beatified on May 23, more than 35 years after he was assassinated while performing Mass.
Pope Francis met with the founder of L'Arche foundation, Jean Venier. Since 1964, the movement has been defending the dignity of the disabled and promoting their integration in society.
The foundation has an international presence. So after speaking with its founder, the Pope also greeted directors who serve in different centers across the globe.
As a gift, the group gave the Pope a publication with the name 'Jesus' in different languages. As usual the Pope spoke volumes without saying a word.
The Pope also spoke to a young man with Down Syndrome on the very day when the world celebrates their achievements.
-Are you happy to be here with Pope Francis?
-Are you happy?
-Give him a kiss on behalf of all of us.”
The foundation offers a series of services. Everything from housing to workshops for people with disabilities.
Fifty years after it was founded, it now has a 137 communities in 36 countries. Every day it fights against what Pope Francis has described as the 'throwaway culture' which rejects people with disabilities.
